FALL SHOP HOP: October 4^th and 5^th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Yes, we’ll be open both days!)

Before I forget: Pat, Nola and Shirley brought in quilts for “Show and Tell” last Saturday. Sherry brought in several projects a couple of weeks ago. I’d left my camera in Texas so I wasn’t able to take pictures. Rosemary was kind enough to take pictures of Sherry’s projects with her cell phone and emailed them to me. I can’t figure out how to rotate Rosemary’s pictures so you’ll need to turn your head to look at them! I’ve posted pictures of everyone’s stuff on the blog.

I failed to mention in the last newsletter: Cheryl’s trunk show on September 28^th is free. We just need to know which show you’re attending (10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.) so we know how many bodies to plan for! Please call, email or stop by so I can get an accurate count!

Karla’s “Paper Piecing” class on September 14^th has been scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a great technique and not too difficult to learn. We had a great time learning a new technique and know you will too.

The UPS man has been here several times this week. I love seeing that big brown truck pull in the driveway! Here’s what came in so far this week:

· “Texas Lone Star” jelly rolls, charm packs and mini charms. These are by designer Sarah Khammash for Moda. If you love all things Texas, you’ll love these pre-cuts! They’re so cute

· several more bolts of “Old Glory Gatherings” by Primitive Gatherings for Moda. We decided to get more of this collection before it’s all gone, never to be found again, anywhere!

· “Over the Rainbow” batiks in Misty Blue!

· “Bella Solids” charm packs and mini charms—the mini charms are so stinkin’ cute!

· Eleven bolts of “you-could-use-this-for-a-Christmas-project” fabrics. We don’t carry a lot of holiday specific fabrics, particularly Christmas fabric. This year I decided to jump in the deep end…….we bought several bolts of fabric that COULD be used for a Christmas project but isn’t holiday specific for Christmas. Does that make any sense? You’ll know what I’m talking about when I get pictures of it posted on the blog, hopefully before this weekend.

· “Muslin Mates” layer cakes, charm packs and jelly rolls. These are brand spanking new pre-cuts from Moda. I’m very happy to get these. I can’t wait to see what someone makes using them.

P-Dub’s Calendar of Events:

Every Saturday: “Sit-N-Sew” at the shop. We have two new Bernina sewing machines for you to use when you come for Sit-N-Sew. That keeps you from lugging your heavy sewing machine to the shop. Sit-N-Sew is always free and is a lot of fun (we actually get some projects completed in between the talking, laughing and eating!). There’s no need to let us know if you’re coming, just show up and plan on having a good time while you’re here. On occasion, Sweetness has been known to cook lunch for all Sit-N-Sew-ers.

August 31st: the shop will be closed for Labor Day weekend

September 1^st: The “Fall Shop Hop” shop owners are getting together to put the finishing touches on our little bundle of joy! As soon as flyers are available, I’ll post it on the blog

September 14^th: Karla K. will be teaching “Paper Piecing” from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please let me know if you want to take Karla’s class. A supplies list will be provided at registration.

September 21^st: “Strip Tube Ruler “class from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Strip Tube Ruler is a hoot to use! Once you start using it, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities! A supplies list will be provided at registration.

September 21^stand 22^nd: “Patchwork of Memories” quilt show by the Discovery Quilters in Shell Knob will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, the 22^nd at the Shell Knob elementary school. Admission is $3.00 for both days.

September 28^th: Cheryl W. will have a free trunk show at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. demonstrating the AccuQuilt Go! Cutter and dies. If you’ve ever wondered how the Go! Cutter works and the beautiful quilts you can make using it, now is the time to find out. Cheryl is bringing lots of quilts she made using her Go! Cutter. Don’t forget: if you buy a Go! Cutter from us, you’ll receive a lifetime 15% discount on the mats and dies. **Please let me know which trunk show you would like to attend (10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.) so we’ll have enough room for everyone. Each trunk show will last approximately one hour.

October 4^th and 5^th: Fall Shop Hop from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The participating shops are “The Quilted Garden” in Aurora, “The Thistle Fabric Shop” in Pierce City and our shop. Purchase a starter kit for $3 at each shop, get some great discounts on fabric and help out a local charity.

October 12^th: “Twister” class from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This wonderful devise will change your life in a positive way! We have three sizes of Twister as well as two smaller versions by Primitive Gatherings.

October 19^th: “Beginning Quilting—part one” 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you want to learn how to quilt but are afraid to try, this class is for you (there will be three sessions, three hours each). A supplies list will be provided at registration.

October 26^th: “Beginning Quilting—part two” 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

November 1st: deadline for bringing back finished Shop Hop block

November 2^nd: “Beginning Quilting—part three” from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Sometime in November: help Melba celebrate her 80^th birthday. The time and date are yet to be determined so….stay tuned.

Also (sometime) in November: “Sweet Pea” by Kansas Troubles Quilters will be here. We ordered the entire collection including all the pre-cuts (including honey buns and fat quarter/fat eighth bundles). I don’t have the slightest idea where we’re going to put that much fabric but I’m sure we’ll think of something! YIPPEE! I can’t wait.

April 4^th and 5^th, 2014: The Cassville guild will be having their quilt show at Crowder College in Cassville.

The shop will be closed this Saturday for Labor Day. Sweetness and I hope you have a safe Labor Day weekend.

Shirley's Tumbler Top

Shirley, her daughter and granddaughter stopped by the shop Saturday. Shirley brought a quilt top she made using her Go! cutter and tumbler die. She didn't want to show it to us but her daughter made her!

Nola's masterpiece quilt!

Nola, her Mom and Aunt were in the shop Saturday. Nola brought the quilt she made as her son's college graduation present. Nola made his quilt using the "Trade Winds" pattern and her "Strip Tube Ruler" (plus mostly Kansas Troubles fabric).

This quilt is huge. It measured 120" x 120". YIKES! It will look wonderful on her son's king sized bed. What a wonderful college graduation present.

(I used the camera's flash on some of the pictures and didn't use it on others. You can tell the difference. Sorry.).

Sherry's projects

Sherry brought several of her projects in for Show and Tell a couple of weeks ago. I'd left my camera in Texas so Rosemary took pictures with her phone and emailed them to me. Thanks, Rosemary.

Shopping trip to Moda

I came back with some really nifty stuff from the shopping trip to Moda. My camera made it's way back from Texas so I'm finally able to take pictures of all the new stuff........LOTS of new stuff!

"Collections for a Cause-Love" by Howard Marcus for Moda. We have the layer cakes, charm packs, jelly rolls and mini charms.

I really don't have a good way to take pictures of the bolts of fabric so, I decided to take pictures of the fat quarters instead. Rest assured, we have fabric on the bolt of all the fat quarters pictured.

We received a lot of paper piecing products: four new books, pin point tweezers and Carol Doak's legal sized paper for paper piecing.

We also received three new batiks (and more are coming). These are "Over the Rainbow" batiks in funky colorways: Trail Blue, Strawberry and Tootie Fruitie.

New Clover Mini irons, the large tips and tote bags.

Pat saw a quilt pattern in a magazine that she fell in love with. She decided to make it using "Warm" solids jelly rolls and "Snap Pop" mini charms. She used "Snap Pop" fat eighths for the border.

For the backing, Pat used our 108" butterfly backing and asked Judi to quilt it for her (Judi and her husband are holding it so I could take pictures).

Jenny Doan's trunk show

Kay, Missy and I were fortunate enough to go to Jenny Doan's trunk show at "The Quilted Garden" on August 10th. Jenny is famous for her tutorials on You Tube and only uses pre-cuts when making quilts. She inspired all of us and my head was spinning when she was finished.

If you ever get the chance to attend one of her trunk shows, do it! She's just as funny in person as she is in her videos.

It seems like a month has gone by since I wrote the last newsletter. It all started on August 10th when Kay, Missy and I attended a trunk show by Jenny Doan at The Quilted Garden in Aurora. Jenny is famous for her tutorials on You Tube (and she’s just as zany in person). She only uses pre-cuts when making quilts. My head was spinning when it was over and I was totally inspired by her. If you ever get the chance to attend her trunk show, do it! She’s wonderful. I walked away totally inspired and full of ideas.

Sweetness, the kids and I left the next day (the 11^th) for Dallas. Moda was having their Open House and I wanted to go (any chance to be surrounded by that much fabric is a wonderful thing). I had a list of things to shop for but quickly realized I could get into serious financial trouble being in a warehouse with so much stuff (plus my head was still spinning from Jenny’s trunk show). I broke out in a cold sweat, my palms were sweaty, my heart was racing………I was NOT having a hot flash………I was having a “moment”…….I was standing inside the fabric Mecca of the Universe, the Holy Grail of quilting, the Alpha and Omega of quilt making. YIKES! Thank goodness I went to the bathroom before I had my ‘’moment”. This was not the first time I’ve gone to Moda but, for some reason, this time, it was different. I had to get a grip…..and fast. I recovered fairly quickly and started shopping.

I really wanted to get fabrics to make “Quilts of Valor”. It just so happened I found quite a few to choose from. YIPPEE!!! I got several bolts of “Old Glory Gatherings” by Primitive Gatherings. Reds, whites and blues. They’re so pretty.

Sweetness gave me a “Clover Mini Iron” a couple of years ago for my birthday. I love it. Pat was helping me with the Midi bag I’m making and brought the mini iron she has. Hers has a nifty plastic guard and a bigger tip. I fell in love with it. Guess what…..I found the new and improved versions at Moda.

The new versions are packaged two different ways: the iron by itself OR with an “assortment” set which has several interchangeable tips and gizmos. I particularly like that the temperature control is directly on the iron, has an ON/OFF switch built into the electric cord and has the plastic guard. How cool is that? Speaking of cool, I also snagged some special totes for the irons (and all the tips if you have the ‘assortment’ set) as well as bigger tips (sold separately) for either iron.

Everyone knows I have poor impulse control. P-O-O-R IMPULSE CONTROL (aka P.I.C). I was thrilled to be standing in the fabric Mecca of the Universe, super duper happy to find the patriotic fabric and the newest version of the Clover mini irons BUT, I almost wet my pants when I saw this next item. (I really need to get out more often)…..it’s called “The Quilter’s Travel Case” by Omni Grid. Grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable. This little dandy is wonderful.

Hear me when I say the P.I.C. kicked in and I went nuclear. This little dandy has a place for everything yet, it’s compact: it has a separate compartment for quilt blocks; books; spools of thread; rotary cutters, rulers; a built in pin cushion, a pouch that zips and a shoulder strap. It looks like a briefcase but….it’s not! I couldn’t put them in the cart fast enough. I kept looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was going to snag them out of my cart!

I took Karla’s “Paper Piecing” class on the 17^th. It was wonderful (this may be a new addiction). Karla brought a couple of books by Carol Doak for us to look at. They were inspiring. She also showed us a nifty pair of tweezers that are great for removing the paper when you’re finished. I ordered both Carol Doak books and the tweezers…..they’re here!

I’ve been asked to explain how the monthly Moda pre-cuts clubs work. We currently have four separate monthly Moda clubs: “Layer Cake” of the month; “Jelly Roll” of the month, “Charm Packs” of the month and the “Combo Club”.

· The “Layer Cake” of the month club entitles you to one Moda layer cake each month. Members of this club receive a 15% discount off each month’s layer cake

· The “Jelly Roll” of the month club entitles you to one Moda jelly roll each month. Club members receive a 15% discount off each month’s jelly roll.

· The “Charm Packs” of the Month club entitles you to two duplicate Moda charm packs each month. Members of this club receive a 15% discount off each month’s charm packs.

· The “Combo Club” is one layer cake, one jelly roll and one charm pack of Moda pre-cuts each month. So far, they’ve always been from the same collection (I don’t think that will change). Members of the “Combo Club” receive 20% off each month’s pre-cuts.

· The fine print: There is a one time fee of $5.00 to join (whether you join one club or all of them). If you start in one club then decide to switch to another one, that’s allowed. You will not have pay the $5.00 membership fee again. We do ask that you make a one year commitment when joining any of the clubs and that you give us at least one month’s notice if you want to switch from one club to another.
You can join any of the clubs at any time.

This time of year makes me want to buy school supplies. No one would know they were for me……….if I run into someone I know while “purchasing” you'd think I was getting it for Sweetness. My name is Pam and I’m a school supplies junkie. Is there a 12 step program for this?
