I finally decided to use two of the new 1930's fabrics that came in last week and the yellow "Quilter's Bias Binding" as the accent piece. The body of the pillowcase is 3/4 of a yard, the cuff is 1/4 yard. One yard of fabric (and three seams later) you have a nifty pillowcase. It was hard for me to envision this only has three seams. It does. I also decided to use French seams to finish the edges. Here goes:
open up the fabric selvage to selvage (right side up) and pin the accent piece to the top |
accent piece added to the top of the raw edge of the "body" fabric, running selvage to selvage. |
add the "cuff" fabric right side down onto the body fabric and accent strip |
here' what it looks like all pinned together. |
start rolling the body fabric toward the cuff fabric to make a tube. |
everything is inside the tube |
It looks like a mess but it's really cool |
sew the first seam. |
grab the body fabric from the tube and start pulling! |
keep pulling the body fabric out of the tube |
Viola! Notice the selvage edges are still along for the ride! |
Seam number two: French seams: fold the pillowcase wrong sides together. Use 1/2" seam allowance to sew the "L" seam . |
I used pinking shears to finish the edges. Now the selvage edges are gone |
We're getting there: press the pillowcase. Only one more seam to go! |
Seam number three: turn the pillowcase inside out. Roll the seam allowance between your fingers to 'set' it in place and sew. |
All seams (inside and out) are finished. Viola! |
My first pillowcase. Not too shabby! |
