Sweetness wanted a pillowcase (and a big surprise for P-Dub!)

When Juanita brought the 'sausage' pillowcase pattern in a couple of weeks ago, I fell in love with the simplicity of it.  Three seams later and you have a pillowcase.  After making the sample pillowcase for the shop, Sweetness said he'd like one too.  He picked out the fabric for the body, the cuff and the accent piece.  Guess what?  He chose Pheasant Hill fabrics  (bless his heart!). He wanted one of the navy prints for the body and the matching border stripe for the cuff.  He also picked out the accent piece.    

What neither of us knew was my friend Sandy was shipping my birthday present, which arrived yesterday (on our wedding anniversary).  Guess what?She made a bigger-than-king-size quilt using the "Double Slice Layer Cake" pattern and.......drum roll please..........Pheasant Hill layer cakes.  Holy cow! She even quilted it herself.  I accused them of being in cahoots with each other but both deny any 'consulting' took place!  Needless to say, I am over the moon with my birthday quilt.    

The quilt arrived before I got his pillowcase finished (but it didn't take very long to get it done!).  Now that we have this gorgeous quilt, I think more pillowcases are needed!  One is just not enough.

Pat's (Cheater's) "Flying Geese"

These are the (Cheater's) "Flying Geese" Pat made last Saturday.  She used part of a charm pack and part of a mini charm pack.  The charm pack is "Marbles Warm" and the mini charm is called  "Paris Flea Market" by 3 Sisters, all by Moda.  Pat did a wonderful job of matching the colors.  The last picture is my attempt at using a "Pheasant Hill" charm pack and the matching mini charm.  I think I like Pat's geese better!

I failed to notice the plastic wrap was still on some of the bolts in last week's pictures of the "Pheasant Hill" bolts.  OOOPS!  Now they're on shelves in the shop, safe and sound! Here goes:  

The Pheasant Hill HAS landed! YIPPEE!

The UPS man was a little late today but what he left was worth the pacing back and forth and finger tapping.  The "Pheasant Hill" fabric from Kansas Troubles is finally here.  I'm so excited.  Sweetness is currently cutting fat quarters as I was taking these pictures.  We received 24 beautiful bolts of the exquisite fabric.  Can you tell I'm excited that it's finally here?  Well, I am.  The flash on my camera didn't do a very good job so, some of these are kinda dark.  Here goes:

NEW BUSINESS HOURS: EVERY (E-V-E-R-Y) Saturday (closed May 25^th, August 31^st, December 28^th).

HOURS: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We received another email from Moda this week (that’s always good news). The shipment of “Pheasant Hill” fabric on the bolt (by Kansas Troubles) will be here tomorrow (the 28^th)…….all 24 yummy, beautiful, luscious, scrumptious bolts. I can’t wait to get these in the shop. We ordered this line six months ago and it’s a month late getting here but, that’s o.k. It will be here tomorrow and that makes me VERY happy! YIPPEE! I’m doing the happy dance!

The “Enchanted Pond” batik jelly rolls and charm packs arrived last Friday. I had to pry my fingers off this stuff. It is SO yummy. I tried to put one of the jelly rolls back on the shelf when one of the little darlings literally jumped into my apron pocket. Imagine that! It really wanted to come home with me……but, I put it back on the shelf. I think I heard a whimper as I closed the shop that night (I’m not saying if it was the jelly roll……or me).

The Aurifil variegated thread was such a big hit, I’ve ordered more colors. They should be here any day but doubt they’ll be here by Saturday. Sorry!

The UPS man has already been here once this week. He brought April’s "Jelly Roll of the Month"; it’s called “Glamping”. If you’re a member of the “Jelly Roll of the Month club”, they’re here and ready to pick up.

Speaking of clubs, Sweetness and I have made another Executive Decision: drum roll please……….we’ve decided to expand our monthly clubs as follows:

1) The “Jelly Roll of the Month Club”: receive one Moda jelly roll each month and receive a 15% discount off that month’s jelly roll. This club has already started but you can join at any time.

2) The “Layer Cake of the Month” club: receive one Moda layer cake each month and receive 15% off that month’s layer cake.

I tried this once before and failed miserably. I’m a gluten for punishment so, I’m going to do it again……one more time………I’m going to do a demonstration of the “Double Slice Layer Cake quilt” at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, the 30^th. I’ve been ripping out (a.k.a. “un-sewing”) the one I started last Saturday and discovered IT WAS WRONG on Sunday afternoon. RATS! I’m all better now. This is a great way to use a layer cake to make a quilt. I love the outcome of this pattern. I can do this! I can………

WINTER HOURS: every Saturday through April

There was a really big box waiting for me when I got in yesterday. I squealed like a little girl when I opened it (imagine the look on the kid’s faces when I squealed). The box was full of “Pheasant Hill” pre-cuts by Kansas Troubles. We are now the proud owners of layer cakes, jelly rolls, charm packs, mini charms and dessert rolls from this line. The fabric on-the-bolt won’t deliver until the middle of March. RATS! Until then, we get to enjoy the pre-cuts! We’ve never had dessert rolls in the shop before. They are (sorta kinda) like jelly rolls except each strip is 5” wide x WOF. The other difference is because the strips are twice as wide (as jelly rolls) there are 20 strips in each roll. Dessert anyone?

Pat made two super cute baby blankets using flannel on each side. She brought them in last Saturday for Show and Tell. Pictures of her (standing in front of Sweetness’ first fat quarter unit) holding the blankets are posted on the blog.

We finally got the big Twister sample quilted. Now I need to put the binding on……….oh joy…...my FAVORITE part of making a quilt……..NOT! I always spend too much time trying to decide which fabric to use for the binding. At least we have “The Binding Tool” to help me when I get near the end! Oh, joy.

We’ve ordered some of Holly Taylor’s new line called “Enchanted Pond”. The layer cakes, jelly rolls and charm packs are on their way. They might be here by Saturday…..cross your fingers. If you’re a member of the “Jelly Roll of the Month” club, “Enchanted Pond” is the next jelly roll….….as soon as they get here………..……

OOPS: I failed to mention we WILL (absolutely positively) be open both days of the shop hop on March 15^th and 16^th.

I realized my mistake when someone said, “you’re only open on Saturdays”……..oops! Rest assured, we will be here bright eyed and bushy tailed on both days. Sorry for the confusion.

Sweetness says we should be ready for “Sit and Sew” by February 16^th so, get ready. He has another big unit to build for the regular fat quarters however, we’ve decided to segregate the 1930’s, reproduction and vintage fats (like they currently are). He’ll build a smaller unit for those. He’s working on the third big unit for the regular fats and assures me the smaller unit WILL NOT take as long to make. Cross your fingers and say your prayers that all the fats will be on the wall by this Saturday. If they are, the bolts will go on the opposite wall and it’ll be time for Sit and Sew. I’ve been drumming my fingers and pacing back and forth over this. You can only imagine how fun I’ve been to live with these past few weeks! If not, just ask Sweetness. I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to tell you what a downright pleasure I’ve been these past few weeks J J J Yes, I said a downright pleasure.

“Thank You” to everyone who voiced an opinion about the batting we should carry. A great big thank you to Karla K. who brought samples of different yummy battings. That really was above and beyond the call of duty! Thanks, Karla. We’re waiting on samples from several different companies to come in before we make any decisions. I am personally leaning toward having wool batting for sure (depending on the cost). We’re also thinking we’ll only carry the 120” wide size which is usually cheaper for the consumer vs. pre-packaged yardage. Does that make sense? Anyway, we’ll let you know……when we know…..what we’re doing…..whenever that might be……..

I never buy a lottery ticket. I bought one. For tonight. I really get carried away dreaming about what to do with the money, if we win. Since Sweetness and I don’t have two legged kids, our list is a little different that other people’s. After tithing, the first purchase would be a brand new quilting machine. Then we would HAVE to make a trip to Moda to buy a bunch of fabric (visit our families while we’re there) and rent a trailer to haul it all home! Then, we’d do whatever was necessary to become Bernina dealers. Our wish is for anyone who doesn’t have access to a sewing machine (or if you don’t want to drag yours to the shop) you could use one of ours in the shop. Of course, the shop is a whole other story. A new (much bigger) shop would have to be built complete with a bathroom and separate area for classes. Once a year, we’d have to have a retreat so, another separate building would need to be built to house all the attendees and their ‘stuff’.

All of this dreaming makes me hungry……………dessert anyone!

Sweetness finished building the first unit for the fat quarters. It is truly a vision of beauty. He’s feverishly working on getting the second unit finished by this Saturday (it’s amazing how much space it takes to house 10,000 fat quarters). Getting the first unit installed and filled made a drastic change in the amount of available space in that part of the shop. Holy cow! I can’t wait until everything is on the walls……….everything……because you know what happens then…….……sit and sew……..sit and sew…..sit and sew………..
 

Cross your fingers the jelly rolls, layer cakes, dessert rolls, charm packs and mini charms of Pheasant Hill (by Kansas Troubles) comes in before Saturday. This is her new line of fabric that’s being released in March (the pre-cuts usually come in a couple of months ahead of the bolted fabric). I’m really looking forward to getting the dessert rolls. They are 5" wide x W.O.F., (sorta like a jelly roll only twice as wide). We’ve never had desserts rolls in the shop before so this will be a new experience for all of us! YIPPEE! I’m so excited.
 

The "Mini" Binding Tools came in. They are for making bindings less than 2" wide for miniature quilts, applique or other small projects. They’re so cute! They almost look like toys!
 

We’ve posted several new pictures on the blog. Sally in Oklahoma made her very first Jelly Roll 1600 quilt. YEAH SALLY! Sandy in Illinois (The Over Achiever) decided to make a double Jelly Roll 1600 (yes, she used two jelly rolls….3200 inches). She sent a picture of the behemoth when she got it finished. Both pics are posted on the blog so please take a look at these beautiful quilts.
 

The very-pretty-in-color-flyer for the Shop Hop is also posted on the blog. Cheryl at The Quilted Garden has a real knack for making flyers and did a great job once again. Not only is it full of all the necessary information but it’s pretty to look at!
 

I’ll try to get pictures of the new fat quarter unit, the Pheasant Hill stuff (if it comes in) and the 108" backings on the blog before Saturday.
 

Help us help you:  

we’re thinking about carrying batting on the roll so we’re taking a survey: What kind of batting would you like to see in the shop: 100% cotton, 80%/20% cotton/polyester or 100% polyester?? White, cream or black? Did you know we can get silk batting? We can also get wool batting. I bet quilts (or anything) made using the wool batting would be so heavy you couldn’t turn over in bed. You’d have to go to sleep in the position you wanted to be in all night because you couldn’t roll over….weighed down by the wool batting……….but you certainly wouldn’t get cold. Anyway, let us know your thoughts on the batting on the roll. Help us help you!

The Super Bowl is this Sunday. Traditionally Sweetness and I get all nestled in, pop some popcorn and watch the game on his big TV. This year, I have to work on Super Bowl Sunday so; we’ve decided to have our Super Bowl sale on Saturday instead. This Saturday only (February 2^nd) all regularly priced fabric on the bolt will be 15% off. We have a lot of new stuff coming in soon and need to make room for it.
 

If you need something between regular business hours, please call. Sweetness is in the ‘man zone’ a lot during the day (making more fat quarter units, among other things). If he doesn’t answer, please leave a message on the machine so he can call you back.
